Good Governance and Economic Development: Opportunities and Challenges (A Case Study of The Egyptian Experience During 2002-2022)

Abstract

The paper aims to analyze the correlation between good governance and economic development in Egypt between 2002 and 2020. The study adopted a descriptive methodology to examine the relationship between governance indicators and the gross domestic product growth rate, which reflects the economic dimension of development, and the human development index, which serves as a proxy for the social dimension. The research found that this relationship varied in the post-January 2011 revolution period compared to before the revolution, where it was more prominent and reflected the positive impact of governance on economic development during that period. The study conducted a SWOT analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities and challenges inherent in the relationship. The research revealed that Egypt faces significant challenges in governance, including an overlap of responsibilities between different administrative entities and lack of effective enforcement of laws, which negatively affect economic development. As a result, the study proposes asset of policies and comprehensive institutional reforms to enhance good governance in Egypt.
