Technocratic Populism in India (2014-2023)

Abstract

The study seeks -through adopting the theory of public policy analysis to monitor and analyze the digital policies of the populist government in India- to answer the questions of what is meant by technocratic populism? What are the digital transformation policies this populism followed to win the elections and raise economic growth rates in India? What are the successes and failures of these policies? The study deals with the economic and financial situation in India, as India went through financial and economic crises that made it adopt digital transformation to achieve financial control and face these crises. The study deals, as well, with the technocratic populism policies, and their extensive and effective adoption of technology in various sectors; such as the use of digital technocracy in managing the 2014 and 2019 election campaigns, the use of digital technocracy in managing programs such as the Digital India Program, the Digital Identity Program (Aadhar), and the digital transformation in the financial sector, the welfare state, the agricultural and health sectors. Finally, the study makes an evaluation of the technocratic populism digital transformation policies, based on their successes and failures. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the success of technocratic populist policies in strengthening the Indian economy and raising economic growth rates.
